A martial arts system with the ultimate aim of creating community change through leadership training for children.
Changing the World, one child at a time.
Visionary Martial Arts
A martial arts academy, but not what you think.

With a limit of 20 members, we are now at the half way mark. For those of you who have friends who are showing interest in having their children join, you can still secure a place in either our 4.00pm class for 7 and 8 year olds or our 4.30pm class for 9 to 15 year olds.
Remember Visionary Martial Arts is all about helping each student understand the difficulties in martial arts so that they don't lose confidence when it gets difficult. In turn, this will make a student more resilient both in the dojo and in life.
By the way, Kyoshi Sean did a demonstration recently at the Bob Jones Corporation state gradings. Here is the link so you can watch it ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39P6btDN7Ok
Don't Be Scared
Quite often in Martial Arts a student is confronted with fear. On many occasions it is fear of injury.
Last week I chose a student to do a shoulder throw on. His first reaction was "Oh no". After a few repetitions, and a few other students also took part, the class was lining up eager to be the next to be thrown. What was initially a source of fear, became excitement, after knowledge and understanding took place. This is one of the key areas of learning in the martial arts - to act logically and not be driven by emotion. To do this the students train every week and after many experiences, realise that they can do anything they put their mind to.
And another observation and a pat on the back: Seamless Transitions
Recently Josh made a huge leap in his martial arts skill by joining two techniques together. This combination of techniques was untaught in our class. He was attempting one technique, saw another and switched to defeat his opponent. This has nothing to do with physical skill and everything to do with awareness. Not only did Josh learn by this but so did the onlookers who were standing next to me and were very impressed. ("That was fully pro" was the comment)
From Kyoshi Sean - "It is situations like this that I enjoy the most in teaching martial arts. After the above situations took place, I sat the students down and made them aware of what happened. Now they are aware of how difficult situations often bring about the best results"
I am looking forward to this week at training. Apart from the benefits of learning self defence, martial arts can create solid leadership skills in kids of all ages. With this in mind, we are embarking on a new direction at VMA by giving the opportunity to our older more mature members to start practising their leadership skills by assisting me in class. To attain this, the classes will need to split.
Starting from Thursday the 18th, the class will split into two distinct groups. Kids aged 7 and 8 will train at 4. During this class, older kids will assist me and be a partner to the younger ones. In many cases, it will be a one to one teacher to student ratio.
At 4.30, students from 9 years of age and upwards will train until 5.15.
This will help me to make an impact on the students I have enrolled so far, and on those that are enquiring to join.
I hope you appreciate the reasoning behind this and look forward to your continued support.
Courtney and Finley moved one step closer to their yellow belts last week after a progress check. Every month on the final Thursday of the month Kyoshi Sean Allen, the club's instructor, watches all the students and announces those who will receive a tip or belt. As there are four tips on the white belt with about 3 months in between each tip, it will take about one year to reach Yellow belt.
Courtney, who has trained with Kyoshi Sean in the past, has been moving through the levels a bit faster due to her previous training. This is called, "fast tracking". If you have seen Courtney in class, you will understand!
Congratulations to Courtney and Chris who have begun their leadership training with Visionary Martial Arts! Every week, Courtney and Chris will spend extra time with Kyoshi Sean doing advanced training, learning teaching techniques and working on other leaderhip skills.
Also, in the 2nd week of the holidays, training will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday at 4 therefore no Thursday session in that week. Normal training sessions continue from the following week.
Visionary Martial Arts has been open for 6 weeks and is just under half full!
Our club has a maximum of twenty students (plus five scholarships) and it seems we will reach that point soon.
Already students have trained in punch defence, knife defence, wrestling and of course the fitness and flexibility work that martial arts is famous for.
Our latest training video is below!

More about Visionary Martial Arts
VMA students study techniques from a variety of disciplines. This keeps the variety in training and gives them the ability to respond to situations.
Techniques come from :
Karate
Muay Thai boxing
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Mixed Martial Arts
Escrima (Phillipine stick and knife defence)
A message from the instructor, Sean Allen:
"I have been operating a large martial arts school (400 members) for the last 15 years. Visionary Martial Arts is a small martial arts academy with only 20 students enrolled plus 4 scholarships for disadvantaged young people/families. This will give me the opportunity to personally concentrate on a small number of students to teach real life self defence, character development, and to a chosen few, leadership training.
The community service is an integral part of the process of creating a balanced martial artist. There is no educational equivalent to helping in an Aged Care facility or directly assisting a disadvantaged family. Although the community service is not a regluar monthly occurrence, when it does take place, the young person will mature in a much more balanced way.
VMA objectives for students are:
·An appreciation for the results of their actions
·A feeling of self-control over their emotions and reactions.
·An awareness of areas of global concern (climate change, sustainability, terrorism)
·An interest in sports and natural adrenalin activities
·An interest in further study in all modules taught in classes.
·Expertise in non-violent conflict avoidance
·An ability to defend themselves and their loved ones.
·A detailed understanding of the main causes of injury/sickness/death in our society
So as you can see, it is much more than just a martial arts club.
Over time, it is a life changing experience"

Purple Belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

In terms of self defence, it doesn't get any more serious than ducking punches and defending against a knife.
Our first belt requirements are all about punch defence (plus other stuff!)
This is how we started the ball rolling last week.
Plus, on the weekend Kyoshi Sean did some training with accomplished actor Richard Norton (Google search his name)

After our first month of training, here is the latest video of techniques learnt in class. The next video will show Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and knife defence!
